NKOR SCHOOL PROJECT REPORT

This is a joint British/African millennium school project, first discussed during a visit to Cameroon in 1998. The target is two fold:

Britain:

To raise £20,000 to pay for the school building.
(This is approximately 19,000,000 CFA - Cameroon currency)

Africa:

To build a Primary School in Nkor village, Kumbo, Cameroon, W. Africa

CURRENT PROGRESS - AUGUST 2000

Britain:

a) The Nkor Educational Fund (NEF) was set up.
b) An official project plan was drafted, approved and signed.
An NEF account was opened in Kumbo for the Nkor school project.
c) The Trustees applied for charitable status. This was achieved in 1999.
 (Registered Charity Number 1076176).
d) So far £7,013 has been raised (this will be increased when we receive the
amount to be reclaimed from the Tax Office through Gift Aid).
e) Via the Mill Hill Missionary Society, London, £3,000 of this was
transferred to Kumbo in April 2000.
f) Via Mill Hill Missionary Society, London, £3,500 to be transferred to Kumbo in October 2000.

Africa:

a) Formation of School Building Committee with elected Executive.
b) School building plans have been drawn and registered.
c) Community leaders have enthusiastically endorsed the project at village meetings
d) The site has been levelled and prepared
(The local people paid for the above work.)
e) Builders have been appointed in December 1999.
 f) The school foundations have been dug and laid. The work started in April 2000.
· Local materials were gathered and contributed.
· Additional building materials and were bought and transported.

We have received a full written report from Fr. Charles Mbuntum and the Nkor Project Executive. This details the work completed so far on the project, the contributions received from the local community and photographic evidence of the school building progress. We have also received a written report and all the original receipts regarding the income and expenditure of the project from Fr. Edward Lukong, the Diocesan Project Commissioner.

From the original estimate of £18,000 made in 1998 there has been an increase of approximately 10% in the expected cost of completion of this project. This is deemed an acceptable increase given the circumstances, taxes and timescales involved. No further increase is expected and the situation is being carefully monitored.

Now the heavy rains have started so work is at a halt until November when the dry season begins. This gives us time (hopefully still within the millennium years) to raise the rest of the money so that the building can be completed as soon as possible.
